Deadline for submissions extended to January 19

We’re very happy about the exciting submissions we have received so far, thanks so much for this! The CHI workshop track chairs have decided to extend the deadline for submission papers to January 19, 2015. So if you’re interested but haven’t submitted yet, please do so until then. We will of course still send the notification of acceptance on February 2, 2015.

CHI Workshop to be held on April 18th

The schedule for the workshops at CHI2015 is online now. This workshop will be held on Saturday, April 18th. This will give us a great opportunity to organize an exciting social event before the start of the main conference (more on this soon).

Byungjun Kwon to give Keynote at CHI Workshop

Byungjun Kwon

The prolific electronic musician from Korea, who has broad experiences as a pop star in his home country and as an internationally renowned experimentalist, will give the keynote at the CHI workshop. Within his own music career, Byungjun Kwon brings together the crossings we want to investigate during this day at CHI: Popular and experimental aesthetics, Korean and international culture, and the playful exploration of new possibilities for creative interfaces. The workshop organizers are thankful for the opportunity to have Byungjun Kwon at the workshop and are very much looking forward to insights from his broad experience.

CHI2015 Workshop: Call for Participation

The workshop will be held in Seoul on either April 18 or 19, 2015. UPDATE: April 18 confirmed as workshop date.

This workshop brings together researchers, designers and instrument builders to explore how we can reframe the way we design “machines” for creative expression. For the purpose of this event, we are focussing on the case of music, but no expertise in this field is required, and the outcomes will be useful to the broader field of instruments and interfaces for creative work.

Note: You do not need to be a musician to participate.

Three opportunities/challenges are presenting themselves: The disappearing computer is putting embodiment back in the center of our concerns; intelligent agents are reaching a level of complexity where it is feasible for an interface to provide suggestions based on work practises; and finally, creative work is increasingly done in collaboration reminiscent of the classic image of musicians playing in a group. The workshop is focussed on charting these new possibilities and constraints.

We invite submissions of true position papers: what is your perspective or experience with these developments, in music or in other areas, which risks and potentials do you see; in short, what is your hunch? Position papers should be short (around 500 words) and illustrated by examples, such as existing or conceptualized instruments, images, or pieces of music. We explicitly encourage submissions to use various forms of creative outlets to express your position.

Please send your submissions to until January 5, 2015. Submitted papers will be peer-reviewed for suitability to the workshop. Notification of acceptance will be sent on February 2, 2015.

Accepted position papers can be presented in a brief session during the workshop. At least one author of each accepted position paper must attend the workshop and all participants must register for the workshop and for at least one day of the conference. Accepted papers and other textual outcomes will be included in the workshop proceedings and made available through the workshop blog:

The workshop will be followed by a social event (on the same day or the day after), where outcomes from the workshop will be presented and discussed with artists from the thriving music scene of Seoul.

A workshop at CHI2015

This is the home of a workshop at CHI2015 focusing on the interactions between sound, music, artists, and the machines they use. The title is a reference to the article “Collaborating with Machines” by Tom Jenkinson aka Squarepusher.

The workshop is organized by the GiantSteps research project, which is part of the FP7 Programme of the European Commission. CHI2015 will be held April 18 – 23 in Seoul, Republic of Korea. The workshop is part of the conference program and will be held directly before the conference commences.

Further information and the Call for Participation will be published on this website soon. Please check back regularly for updates, or subscribe to this blog.
